Routing Assistant
If you have been a Boundary Waters paddler and would like to help paddlers with trip routing, camping equipment and fishing advice….you would like this job. You have great interaction with the customers.
As an outfitter, we listen to our customers and find out what it is they want to accomplish on their wilderness trip. Then we try as best we can to match their desires with the area of the park and route that will let them enjoy their trip to the fullest. We also try and prepare them as much as possible prior to their trip to eliminate as many surprises as we can. And this takes knowledge on our part and preparation prior to customers’ arrival.
Before the customer arrives for their trip, we sit down with their paperwork and determine their entry point and tentative exit point and mark on a set of maps all of the interesting sites along that route. We suggest campsites that may be nicer for their particular group size, fishing lakes, rock formations, etc. Everything that we can point out is valuable to our customer because the area is so vast that if they aren’t informed, they might miss things that they would want to otherwise see.
Our routing sessions last as long as it takes for our customers to feel comfortable setting off into the wilderness with their map and the information we’ve given them. Usually this will last between one and two hours. During these routing sessions, the routing assistant will present the customers’ route and discuss the specifics and answer any questions that come about. The park rules are discussed and we make sure that the customer knows them entirely as they will be responsible for abiding by them on their trip. We explain all of the equipment that is packed that they are renting from Seagull and demonstrate how to use it all so they are familiar with it to remove any questions when they are out in the park without the aid of our help. Depending on the group and their experience level, the routing assistant will field questions regarding the different canoe strokes, canoe basics, fishing advice and techniques (this is a big one for many groups), camping tips, camp site descriptions, safety precautions in bad weather, what to do in case of emergency, trip itinerary ideas and options and many more.
The job of the routing assistant is to be knowledgeable of the area, camping in general, fishing tactics, rules of both parks and able to get the answers to the customers’ questions. It is necessary to be personable and capable of carrying on conversations with customers. You must show a genuine interest in the customers’ trip success and able to help make that come true by providing the tips and advice necessary. Routing assistant will also be asked to take on other roles during slower times of the season when help is needed in other areas of the business.
The successful candidate will have:
- Good presentation skills
- Be able to interact with multiple personalities during the same presentation
- Attention to detail
- Customer service
- Previous canoe country experience a major plus
- An interest in expanding their knowledge of the area through reading and paddling on days off
- A willingness to learn and be taught
- An engaging personality is a plus
